Located about 30 miles north of Seattle, in Snohomish County in northwestern Washington.
The town is a port at the mouth of the Snohomish River on Port Gardner Bay (an inlet of Puget Sound).
Once a mill town built on wood-based industries, the town was the site of the Everett Massacre - a conflict between lumberjacks and lumber merchants.

Today's labor force of 90,000 is mainly employed in technology and service based industries, including: the shipping of lumber, aluminum ore and other cargo; commercial fishing; tourism; and the manufacture of aircraft and pulp and paper.
Everett Community College was founded in 1941, and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, to the east of the city was established in 1893.

In 1792 the English explorer Captain George Vancouver visited the territory and took possession of the region for Great Britain. Settled in 1862, laid out in 1890, the city itself was founded in 1892 and became the site of the Western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway transcontinental railroad (completed 1893).
It was named by one of the founders, Charles L. Colby, for his son, Everett.
